Why Computer Science in Germany?

6 reasons Indian students choose Masters in CS in Germany

Germany’s tech sector still cannot fill positions fast enough — and Indian CS graduates have a structural advantage. Most public universities charge zero tuition, the EU Blue Card pathway is among the world’s fastest for IT roles, and SAP, Siemens, BMW, Mercedes, Bosch, and Deutsche Bank recruit directly from TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, KIT, and TU Berlin. The ROI case for CS in Germany is unmatched in Europe.

💰
Zero Tuition at Public Universities

Public universities including TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin, LMU Munich, Heidelberg, and TU Dresden charge ZERO tuition fees — you only pay a semester contribution of €100–€350 that covers admin and free public transport. Baden-Württemberg (KIT, Stuttgart) is the only exception with €1,500/sem for non-EU students.

🏆
QS Top-100 CS Universities

TU Munich (QS #28), RWTH Aachen (QS #105), Heidelberg (QS #80), and LMU Munich (top 65 for CS) are all globally elite. TU9 — Germany’s alliance of nine technical universities — produces more CS graduates than any other EU country. Research partners include Max Planck Institutes, Fraunhofer, SAP, and Siemens.

🇪🇺
EU Blue Card — Fast PR Pathway

Software engineers, data scientists, AI/ML engineers, and cybersecurity specialists are all on Germany’s EU Blue Card shortage list. Recent graduates (within 3 years) qualify at the lower threshold of €45,934/yr (2026). Permanent residency in just 21 months with B1 German, or 33 months without.

🏢
SAP, Siemens, BMW Hire Directly

Germany’s industrial base — SAP, Siemens, BMW, Mercedes, Bosch, Deutsche Bank, Allianz, plus US tech giants Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta with major Berlin/Munich offices — all recruit directly from German CS programmes. Berlin alone hosts 3,500+ tech startups.

🕐
18-Month Job Seeker Visa

After graduating, you get 18 months on a job seeker visa to find qualifying employment — no lottery, no employer sponsorship needed upfront. This is significantly more generous than the UK’s 24-month Graduate Route (which has no PR path) and more accessible than the US H-1B (only 25% selection rate).

📚
English-Taught — No German Needed

Germany offers 46+ entirely English-taught Master’s programmes in Computer Science across 27 universities. No German required for admission to these. Many universities offer free German language courses alongside studies, so you graduate bilingual and significantly more employable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Masters in Computer Science in Germany — FAQ

Questions Indian students most often ask Sarem before applying for MSc Computer Science in Germany.

Yes — at most German public universities. TU Munich, LMU Munich, RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin, TU Darmstadt, TU Dresden, and Passau all charge ZERO tuition for international students. You only pay a semester contribution of €100–€360 covering admin and free public transport. The only exception is Baden-Württemberg state (KIT, Heidelberg, Stuttgart, Freiburg), which charges non-EU students €1,500/semester (~₹2.8 Lakhs over 2 years — still cheap by global standards).
It depends on three factors: your CGPA, target specialisation, and city. TUM (QS #28) is Germany’s #1 — most competitive (CGPA 8.5+) and strongest brand. RWTH Aachen (QS #105) is best for applied CS and automotive software — lower admission bar and cheaper city. TU Berlin (QS #147) has the best startup access and the most lenient English requirement (B2/IELTS 5.5–6.0). For AI/ML research, TUM and LMU lead. For data science, RWTH. For cybersecurity, TU Darmstadt. Sarem helps you weigh these against your specific CGPA and goals.
CGPA requirements vary widely. Elite universities (TUM, KIT, RWTH Aachen) typically require 8.5/10 (75–80%+) and 140 ECTS credits in relevant CS coursework. Mid-tier (TU Berlin, TU Darmstadt, TU Dresden, Stuttgart) accept 7.5/10 (65–70%+). Universities of Applied Sciences (Passau, FH Dortmund, IU International) accept 6.5/10. Strong programming projects, internships, and a tailored SOP can compensate for borderline CGPAs at all but the most elite institutions.
Not for admission — Germany hosts 46+ entirely English-taught MSc CS programmes across 27 universities, all of which accept IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 90+. However, B1/B2 German significantly improves career prospects: most companies offer 10–20% higher salaries to candidates fluent in German, and B1 German accelerates the EU Blue Card PR pathway (21 months instead of 33). Most universities offer free German language courses alongside studies — we recommend starting at A1 before departure.
Since November 2022, all Indian applicants to German universities must obtain an APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) certificate. APS verifies the authenticity of your academic documents — degree certificates, transcripts, board mark sheets. The process takes 3–4 weeks if documents are in order, longer if discrepancies are found. Application is via aps-india.de. APS is required BEFORE you apply to any German university. Sarem handles the full APS process for our students, including document attestation through the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.
Entry-level CS roles in Germany start at €45,000–€55,000/yr. Average salaries by specialisation: Software Engineer €70,000/yr; Data Scientist €67,000/yr; DevOps Engineer €67,500/yr; AI/ML Engineer €64,500/yr; Cybersecurity Analyst €66,500/yr. LMU’s Elite Software Engineering programme reports graduates earning €80,000+ entry-level. Senior engineers and tech leads at SAP, Siemens, BMW, and Mercedes earn €85,000–€130,000+. Munich and Frankfurt offers run €10k–€15k higher than Berlin or Leipzig. EU Blue Card threshold for IT shortage roles in 2026 is €45,934/yr.
After graduation, you get an 18-month job seeker visa to find qualifying employment. Computer Science roles (software engineering, data science, AI/ML, cybersecurity) are all on Germany’s EU Blue Card shortage occupation list. Recent graduates whose degree was obtained within the last 3 years auto-qualify at the lower €45,934/yr threshold (2026). Once issued, the Blue Card leads to German permanent residency in just 21 months with B1 German proficiency, or 33 months without. German citizenship is eligible after 5 years total residence (3 years with B2 German).
German universities operate two intakes: Winter Semester (starts October — deadlines typically 15 July or earlier for non-EU students) and Summer Semester (starts April — deadlines typically 15 January). Winter is the larger intake with more programmes and seats. TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, KIT, and LMU all offer both intakes for most CS programmes. TU Berlin offers winter intake only for MSc Informatik. Sarem recommends starting your application 8–10 months before your target intake to accommodate APS, uni-assist, and visa timelines.
