7 Reasons ยท 2026

Why a Master’s in Germany makes financial and career sense in 2026

Germany has built the most rational European pipeline for STEM graduates from India โ€” tuition-free public universities, the largest English-taught Master’s catalogue outside the UK, and a labour market with 600,000+ unfilled skilled roles backed by an EU Blue Card threshold built for fresh graduates.

01

โ‚ฌ0 tuition at most public universities

Master’s degrees at public universities in 15 of 16 federal states cost โ‚ฌ0 in tuition. Only a semester contribution of โ‚ฌ150โ€“โ‚ฌ350 applies โ€” and it covers your public transport pass for the whole semester.

02

1,930 English-taught Master’s

Per the DAAD Wissenschaft Weltoffen 2025 report, German universities offer roughly 1,930 English-taught Master’s programmes โ€” about 18% of the entire Master’s catalogue. You don’t need German to start.

03

India is the #1 source country

59,419 Indian students were enrolled in winter 2024/25 โ€” overtaking China to become Germany’s largest international student group, with 20% YoY growth (Wissenschaft Weltoffen 2025).

04

18-month post-study work visa

Section 20 AufenthG grants every Master’s graduate up to 18 months to find qualified employment โ€” one of the longest post-study windows in Europe. Unlimited work hours during the search.

05

EU Blue Card built for fresh graduates

Recent graduates (within 3 years) and shortage occupations qualify at โ‚ฌ45,934.20 in 2026 โ€” well below typical Munich/Frankfurt offers. PR follows in 21 months with B1 German, 27 without.

06

Engineering powerhouse

43% of all international students in Germany study engineering. RWTH Aachen, TU9 universities, and Fraunhofer Institutes anchor a researchโ€“industry pipeline that hires graduates directly into Bosch, BMW, Siemens, SAP.

07

163 shortage occupations

Germany officially recognises 163 occupations as shortage roles in 2026 โ€” across IT, engineering, healthcare, mathematics, natural sciences. Working in one earns a faster visa, lower Blue Card threshold, and accelerated PR.

APS Bescheinigung ยท Mandatory

The APS Certificate every Indian Master’s applicant needs

Since November 2022, every Indian student applying for a German student visa needs an APS Certificate (renamed APS Bescheinigung from 15 July 2024). It verifies academic documents before the embassy will process your visa. No APS = no visa, period.

1

Online application at aps-india.de

Apply via the official APS India portal โ€” not through any consultancy. Pay the INR 18,000 fee (non-refundable). Sarem prepares the file and submits with you.

2

Document upload & verification

Class X & XII marksheets, all university transcripts, degree certificate (or provisional), passport. APS verifies authenticity directly with your university.

3

Interview (most candidates)

Brief 15โ€“20 minute video interview with APS in New Delhi to confirm academic identity. Sarem runs interview prep covering the most common APS question patterns.

4

APS Bescheinigung issued

3โ€“4 weeks normal processing, up to 12 weeks during peak season (Aprilโ€“July). Certificate has indefinite validity once issued โ€” apply 4โ€“5 months before any university deadline.

โš ๏ธ New 70% Class XII rule for Winter 2026/27 onwards (UG only)

The German anabin database was updated on 15 March 2026 to require a minimum of 70% in Class XII for direct undergraduate entry to a German university. This rule applies to undergraduate applications only โ€” Master’s applicants are unaffected. If you hold a Bachelor’s degree from a recognised Indian university, this UG-side rule does not apply to you. Sarem’s review checks this at the very first call so no time is wasted.

Stuck on the APS Bescheinigung process? We file it for you.

Sarem prepares your APS application end-to-end โ€” document attestation, interview prep, scheduling, and post-submission follow-up. Included in our Germany application service.

3

Processing 1โ€“2 months

Standard processing 4โ€“8 weeks; some applicants receive decisions in 6 working days. Visa Type D issued for 90 days entry; you convert to a residence permit within 3 months of arrival.

4

Post-study: 18-month work visa

Section 20 AufenthG. After Master’s graduation, apply for the 18-month residence permit to find qualified work. Unlimited work hours during search. Non-renewable โ€” make it count.

โš ๏ธ Remonstration appeal abolished worldwide on 1 July 2025

Per the German Federal Foreign Office: the remonstration appeal procedure was abolished worldwide from 1 July 2025. If a visa application is refused, the only remaining options are (a) reapply with corrected documents, or (b) file with the Berlin Administrative Court. This makes first-time visa accuracy critical โ€” Sarem reviews every visa file twice before submission to prevent the rare but irreversible refusal.

๐Ÿ’ผ EU Blue Card โ€” your Master’s-degree fast track to PR

The EU Blue Card 2026 thresholds: โ‚ฌ50,700 standard (about โ‚ฌ4,225/month) or โ‚ฌ45,934.20 for shortage occupations and recent graduates within three years of graduation. IT, engineering, mathematics, natural sciences, healthcare are all on the shortage list. The lower threshold is achievable with most starting Master’s-graduate offers in Munich, Frankfurt, Stuttgart. PR follows in 21 months on the Blue Card with B1 German, 27 months without German, or 33 months on a regular work permit. Family members can join immediately and work without restriction.

Why Sarem

India’s most-trusted Europe-focused consultancy

Sarem is built around a single editorial promise โ€” honest advice, even when it costs us a client. If Germany is genuinely better for you than Ireland, the UK, or France, we will say so. If it isn’t, we’ll tell you that too. Our job is to get you to the right country, the right university, and the right Master’s programme โ€” not to push whatever pays the highest commission.

Founded by Prem and Sarah Ingrid โ€” who have lived this journey themselves and know every step. Our Germany Master’s guidance covers the full APS Bescheinigung, university shortlisting via uni-assist, the Sperrkonto setup, the digital visa portal, and pre-departure orientation.

Honest pricing โ€” no hidden incentives

Public universities: Tuition is โ‚ฌ0, but public universities pay no commission to consultants. We charge a transparent service fee for application support โ€” quoted upfront in your free consultation.

Private universities (WHU, ESMT, Frankfurt School, etc.): Private institutions pay us a placement commission, so there is no service fee for you.

Either way, you know exactly how we earn โ€” and that means our public-university recommendation can never be a hidden upsell. The free 1:1 consultation always comes first, with no commitment.

FAQ ยท Master’s in Germany 2026/27

Everything Indian Master’s applicants ask in 2026

The questions Indian Master’s applicants actually ask Sarem in 2026 โ€” answered with verified data, not generic claims.

Is a Master’s degree in Germany really free for Indian students in 2026? +

At public universities in 15 of Germany’s 16 federal states, a Master’s is tuition-free for Indian students. Only a semester contribution of approximately โ‚ฌ150โ€“โ‚ฌ350 applies, which covers public transport and student services.

Two exceptions: Baden-Wรผrttemberg charges โ‚ฌ1,500 per semester for non-EU students at state universities โ€” this affects Heidelberg, KIT, Freiburg, Stuttgart, Tรผbingen, and Mannheim. Technical University of Munich (TUM) charges โ‚ฌ4,000โ€“โ‚ฌ6,000 per semester for Master’s programmes from Winter Semester 2024/25 onwards.

All other public universities โ€” RWTH Aachen, LMU Munich, FU Berlin, HU Berlin, TU Berlin, TU Darmstadt, Hamburg, Cologne, Bonn โ€” remain tuition-free for Indian Master’s students in 2026.

Which is the best university in Germany for a Master’s? +

Per QS World University Rankings 2026, the leaders are: TUM #22 (highest rank ever achieved by a German university), LMU Munich #58, Heidelberg #80, FU Berlin #88, KIT #98, RWTH Aachen #105, HU Berlin #133, TU Berlin #138.

The “best” depends on your discipline, fee budget, and city: RWTH Aachen leads engineering (and is free); TUM leads CS and business but charges fees; LMU and Heidelberg dominate sciences and humanities; TU Berlin is strong for tech in Berlin’s startup ecosystem. Sarem’s free 1:1 consultation matches your specific profile to the best-fit programme.

How many English-taught Master’s are available in Germany? +

Per the DAAD Wissenschaft Weltoffen 2025 report, German state-recognised universities offered approximately 1,930 English-taught Master’s programmes as of summer 2025 โ€” about 18% of all Master’s programmes nationally. Almost every German university now offers at least one English-language Master’s.

You can therefore complete an entire Master’s in Germany without learning German first. However, B1 German is strongly recommended for the post-study job search outside Berlin/Munich, and is required to qualify for an EU Blue Card after 21 months instead of 27.

What is the salary after a Master’s in Germany? +

Per the German Federal Employment Agency Entgeltatlas and Make-it-in-Germany salary data for 2026: software engineers and IT specialists โ‚ฌ52,000โ€“โ‚ฌ72,000 starting; mechanical and electrical engineers โ‚ฌ52,000โ€“โ‚ฌ62,000; data scientists โ‚ฌ58,000โ€“โ‚ฌ75,000; chemical and biotech โ‚ฌ55,000โ€“โ‚ฌ68,000; finance and consulting โ‚ฌ58,000โ€“โ‚ฌ80,000.

Munich, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Hamburg pay 10โ€“18% above the Berlin/Leipzig/Dresden bands. The EU Blue Card threshold for shortage occupations and recent graduates within three years of graduation is โ‚ฌ45,934.20 in 2026 โ€” well below typical Master’s-graduate offers in any of the major cities.

How long is the post-study work visa after a Master’s in Germany? +

Section 20 of the Residence Act (AufenthG) grants every international graduate of a German Master’s a residence permit for up to 18 months to find qualified employment โ€” one of the longest post-study windows in Europe. Unlimited work hours are permitted during this period, including any work, not only the field of study.

Once you sign a qualified job offer, the EU Blue Card or skilled worker permit takes over. Permanent residency follows in 21 months on the Blue Card with B1 German, 27 months without German, or 33 months on a regular skilled-worker permit.

Is the APS Certificate mandatory for a Master’s application in 2026? +

Yes, mandatory. Since November 2022, every Indian student applying for a German student visa requires an APS Certificate (renamed APS Bescheinigung from 15 July 2024) issued by APS India in New Delhi. The fee is INR 18,000, processing time runs 3โ€“4 weeks in normal periods and up to 12 weeks during peak intake months.

The certificate verifies academic documents and once issued has indefinite validity. Applications are made online at aps-india.de โ€” not through any consultancy. Sarem prepares the full APS file end-to-end as part of the standard application service, including interview prep.

What IELTS / TOEFL score do I need for a Master’s in Germany? +

Most English-taught Master’s accept IELTS 6.5+ overall (no band below 6.0) or TOEFL iBT 88โ€“95+. Top-tier programmes โ€” TUM CS / Management, RWTH Computer Science, Heidelberg life sciences โ€” expect IELTS 7.0. Some universities accept Duolingo English Test 110+, but Sarem advises IELTS or TOEFL for safer visa-stage acceptance.

If your degree was conducted entirely in English, several universities accept a Medium-of-Instruction certificate from your home institution in lieu of IELTS โ€” but the German consulate may still require IELTS for the visa file. Confirm both at the application stage.

Is GRE required for a Master’s in Germany? +

No โ€” GRE is not required at any German public university for Master’s admission. A handful of programmes accept GRE as optional supporting evidence (e.g. some quantitative finance Master’s), but no German university makes it mandatory. This sets Germany apart from US and Singapore Master’s, where GRE is often non-negotiable.

For business Master’s at private schools (WHU, ESMT, Frankfurt School), GMAT 650+ is expected. TUM Management requests GMAT 650+ as well. For all engineering, science, and CS Master’s, GRE is irrelevant โ€” your CGPA, programming portfolio, and statement of purpose carry the weight.

When are the application deadlines for Winter 2026/27? +

The two main intakes are Winter Semester (October start) and Summer Semester (April start). Most Indian Master’s applicants target Winter Semester.

Winter 2026/27 deadlines for Indian applicants: Uni-assist application close 15 July 2026 for most universities. Sarem files by 31 May 2026 for safer document verification. TUM closes 31 May for non-EU. RWTH and Heidelberg accept later for some programmes; LMU is competitive and earlier.

Summer 2027: Application deadline 15 January 2027 โ€” fewer Master’s programmes accept summer entry, mostly second-cycle CS, engineering, and economics.

Does Sarem charge a fee for Master’s in Germany application support? +

The 1:1 consultation call is free and carries no commitment. Beyond that, our pricing depends on the type of university you apply to:

Public universities: Tuition is โ‚ฌ0, but public universities in Germany don’t pay commission to consultants โ€” so we charge a transparent service fee for our application support (APS Bescheinigung preparation, uni-assist filing, scholarship applications, Sperrkonto setup, visa documentation, and pre-departure orientation). The fee is quoted upfront after we understand your profile, before any commitment.

Private universities: Private German universities (WHU, ESMT, Frankfurt School, IU International) pay us a placement commission, so there is no service fee for you.

This split exists for one reason โ€” so our recommendation between public and private can never be a hidden upsell. You always know exactly what we earn and how. Most Indian Master’s students we place go to public universities (better ROI given โ‚ฌ0 tuition) and pay our fee with confidence because they understand why we charge it.
